THE EUROVİSİON SONG CONTEST 2008

The Eurovision Song Contest 2008 is the 53rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be hosted by Serbia. The semi-finals will be held on 20 and 22 May respectively and the final on 24 May 2008 in the capital, Belgrade. The Belgrade Arena, venue for the Contest, is among the largest indoor arenas in Europe, with a total capacity of more than 20,000 seats. Serbia gained the right to host the Contest after Marija Šerifović won the 2007 Contest in Helsinki, Finland. The host broadcaster will be RTS.
At a press conference in Helsinki in May 2007,
Svante Stockselius, executive supervisor of the Contest for the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that the competition's format may be expanded to two semi-finals in 2008 or 2009.[6] On 28 September 2007 it was announced that the EBU had approved the plan of hosting two semi-finals in 2008.[7] The 2008 contest's official website opened on 15 January 2008. For the first time ever, Eurovision.tv will stream national finals on ESCTV with broadcasters' permission.[8] On 30 January 2008, Eurovision.tv revealed the theme of the Contest: "The Confluence of Sound".[9]
On 14 September 2007, the Mayor of Helsinki handed over the "Eurovision keys" to the Deputy of Belgrade. This ceremony is meant to be a tradition from now, and the ring contains a key from every city that has ever hosted the competition.[10]
Due to problems and riots in Belgrade, due to the declaration of independence by Kosovo, on 22 February 2008 the EBU held a phone conference to decide if the contest should be moved to a different city. Ukraine was considered an option since they came second in Eurovision Song Contest 2007. YLE were another option, as they hosted last years competition in Helsinki, Finland.[11] ERT also offered the EBU to host the contest in Athens, Greece again.[12] It was later decided that the contest will stay in Belgrade, with the EBU giving support. RTS will gain a guarantee of safety and security from the government of Serbia for all visitors and participants of the contest.[13] Therefore, the delegations of Croatia, Israel and Albania will have a special security.[14] The show will be hosted by Jovana Janković and Željko Joksimović.[15] However, Jelena Tomašević will represent Serbia with a song composed by Joksimović; this led to debate over his role in the contest.[16]

AS DEATH APPROACHES

AS DEATH APPROACHES

Toward the coming on of evening, in winter time,

At the window of a sick man's bedroom-

I'm not the only one to be so alone;

It's dark on the sea, the sky is dark, too.

Funny, how the birds are behaving tonight!

Don't mind that I'm poor, that I'm alone in the world;-

Toward the coming on of evening in winter time-

I too in my time have had my love affairs.

To be famous, to have women, to make money-

In time one gets to know the world as it is.

Is it because we're to die that we have these regrets?

What were we, what happened to us in this world,

In this mortal old world, except evil?

We shall be rid of our dirt at our death,

With death we'll get to be good men at last.

Being famous, having women, making money, and all-

We'll forget all that when we die.

I AM LISTENING TO ISTANBUL

I AM LISTENING TO ISTANBUL

I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed
First a breeze is blowing
And leaves swaying
Slowly on the trees;
Far, far away the bells of the
Water carriers ringing,
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed.
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed
A bird is passing by,
Birds are passing by, screaming, screaming,
Fish nets being withdrawn in fishing weirs,
A woman's toe dabbling in water,
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed.
I am listening,
The cool Grand Bazaar,
Mahmutpasha twittering
Full of pigeons,
Its wast courtyard,
Sounds of hammering from the docks,
In the summer breeze far, far away the odor of sweat,
I am listening.
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed
The drunkenness of old times
In the wooden seaside villa with its deserted boat house
The roaring southwestern wind is trapped,
My thoughts are trapped
Listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed.
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed
A coquette is passing by on the sidewalk,
Curses, sings, sings, passes;
Something is falling from your hand
To the ground,
It must be a rose.
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed.
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed
A bird is flying round your skirt;
I know if your forehead is hot or cold
Or your lips are wet and dry;
Or if a white moon is rising above the pistachio tree
My heart's fluttering tells me...
I am listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed.
